The Indian Consulate General in New York announced on Friday that an Indian student was killed in the US state of Ohio and police are investigating. However, the cause of death is not yet known.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of Uma Sathya Sai Gadde, an Indian student from Cleveland, Ohio,” the Indian Consulate in New York said in a post on X.

The consulate general said all possible assistance was provided to the families of the deceased students, including transporting the bodies to India as soon as possible.

“Police investigation is ongoing. @IndiainNewYork continues to be in contact with the family in India. We are providing all assistance, including moving Uma Gadde’s remains to India as soon as possible,” the consulate general said. .

The incident comes amid a rise in deaths of Indian students in the United States.

Earlier, in March, a 25-year-old Indian student went missing in the Cleveland area of ​​the US, after which his family asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to search for their son after receiving a “ransom call”.

Mohammed Abdul Arafat, a native of Hyderabad, came to the United States in May 2023 to pursue a master’s degree in IT from Cleveland University, but has been missing since March 7, 2024.

His father, Mohd Saleem, said he received a phone call 10 days later telling him his son (Abdul Arafat) had been kidnapped and demanding a $1,200 ransom.

Most recently, in February of this year, an Indian student was brutally attacked in Chicago.

After the attack, the Indian Consulate General in Chicago said it was in contact with the victim, Syed Mazahir Ali, and his wife in India. The Indian mission has pledged all possible assistance to Ali and his family from Hyderabad.

A video posted on social media showed Ali bleeding profusely as he described the horrific incident.

Meanwhile, Purdue University student Neil Acharya was found dead on January 30 after being missing for several days, according to the Tippecanoe County coroner.

Similarly, on January 29, another Indian student, identified as Vivek Saini, was brutally beaten to death with a hammer by a homeless man inside a store in Lithonia, Georgia, US.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, but the date of the incident could not be confirmed.
